(Noun) The 1958-1963 Pope, much more down-to-earth than his austere, patrician predecessor. John was seen as pastoral and avuncular; Pius as forbidding and stern.
Usage: People loved "Good Pope John;" they respected (sometimes) Pope Pius XII.
