Definition

The state of being male or female, as in gender identity and gender roles. In every day speech, sex and gender are used interchangeably; in the social sciences however, a distinction is made between them, sex refering to the biological makeup of the human body, its genital configuration, while gender refers to the social meanings and characteristics associated with certain types of people.
