(Noun) Another name for the acetabulum - the cup like socket at the base of the hip bone, that holds the head of the femur.
Usage: When the cartilage in the hip wears away the periosteum of the head of the femur and of the cotyloid cavity is exposed. This condition is commonly described as "bone on bone". Since the periosteumis a lining over the bone filled with nerve tissue, the condition is very painful.
