(Noun) A popular newspaper/magazine game. One enters the answers to clues in up-and-down interlocking squares. American crosswords are tests of knowledge - with wit/humor often thrown in. British crosswords rely on wordplay and wit.
Usage: In a British crossword puzzle, "something new" might be "Newcastle," and "on-site" might be "lamp switch". I'm American, and don't like this British snarkiness. In Britain they probably consider our crosswords pedestrian and unimaginative.
