tenko

Definition

tenko rate
(Noun) Tenko originated as a Japanese word for a "roll call", used in prisons and prison of war camps. As the inmates were counted it was customary for them to return an obligatory bow of the head to their captors. During the 1980s, Tenko was adopted as the title of a BBC television (UK) series about a group of women interned in a Japanese camp during World War Two.
