tenebrism rate
(Noun) term used in art to describe a picture that is marked with extreme contrasts, much more pronounced than chiaroscuro. In tenebrism the majority of a painting would be shadowed, with a lighter figure emerging from the darkness.
Usage: Martyrdom of St Andrew by Jusepe de Ribera, painted in 1628, shows perfect tenebrism in its isolation of the light central figure.
