smoot rate
(Noun) About 5,7". Reference to Oliver Smoot , M.I.T. '62 - who, in October 1958 as a fraternity initiation was laid end-to-end across Boston's/Cambridge's Massachusetts Avenue Bridge to measure it in "smoots." ("Smoot" marks are painted all the way across even now.)
Usage: A "smoot" as a unit of measurement is occasionally used in jocular-but-semi-serious references in academic papers. (Presumably by M.I.E. grads, mostly.)
