Definition
1. The female genitalia and pubic hair, based on the name for a 'pubic wig sometimes worn from the 18 th century, often to disguise the shame of those who had been shaved in the treatment of venereal diseases '.2. A pubic wig. Defined by Captain Francis Grose in Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue (1811) as: ' Counterfeit hair for women's privy parts.' According to Lawrence Paros. The Erotic Tongue (1984): ' A smallpox epidemic resulted in considerable fallout in the most exotic places. Thoroughly embarrassed by their baldness, women fashioned artificial hairpieces known as merkins (merkin also being a long standing name for the female genitalia, 17 th C) .'
