Definition
Prior to C19 th , when it was still unknown that conception required the union of a sperm and an egg, it was assumed that only men were responsible for the continuation of the species and that the semen contained homunculi, fully formed tiny people who grew up into human beings after being deposited into the womb. Singular: homunculus.
