(Noun) SPG - This is the abbreviation for self-propelled gun. During world war two Britain named the self-propelled guns after the different officials of the church. Some of the names they used were: Deacon, Sexton, Archer, Bishop, and one well known to the U.S. Forces was the Priest. That name came about because of the pulpit like mounting of the 50 cal. machine gun used for air defence etc.
These self-propelled guns were usually used as mobile artillery support and sometimes in the anti-tank role. They would also be used in other minor roles too. (I would recommend further research into regiment histories for that. R.W.D.)
Usage: The Sexton self-propelled gun was a Ram tank chassis with a 25 pounder artillery piece mounted on it.
