Also known as: Neisseria gonorrhea , a sexually transmitted disease (STD) caused by a kidney-shaped bacterium called Neisseria gonorrheae. Gonorrhea is almost always passed through unprotected anal, vaginal, or oral sex. Babies can get gonorrhea in their eyes at birth if their mother is infected. SYMPTOMS: Symptoms develop from 2-30 days after infection. IN MEN: A yellowish discharge from the penis, burning/itching around tip of penis, painful and frequent urination. +/- 20% of infected men show no symptoms. In later stages, the infection may move into the prostate, seminal vesicles, and epididymis. Untreated, gonorrhea can lead to sterility. IN WOMEN: +/- 50% of women show no symptoms or symptoms so mild they are ignored. Early symptoms include increased vaginal discharge, irritation of the external genitals, pain or burning on urination and abnormal bleeding between periods. If untreated, the infection will usually spread to the uterus, fallopian tubes and ovaries causing pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). TREATMENT: Standard antibiotics, usually a member of the penicillin family.
