Usage: It was a beautiful cathedral.

(Noun) A Christian church that's the seat of a bishop - Catholic (St Patrick's - NYC), Episcopal (St. John the Divine's - NYC), Presbyterian, etc.

Usage: If you see the BIGGEST Catholic church around, it's worth asking if it's technically a cathedral, but sometimes the answer's a surprise: St. John Lateran's, NOT St. Peter's Basilica is the Pope's seat.
