a distinction without a difference

Definition

a distinction without a difference rate
(Expression) A distinction that is meaningless or inconsequential.
Usage: To say that case precedent isn't on all fours just because it was decided in a different county of the same state is usually (not always!) a distinction without a difference, and wouldn't affect the outcome.
