(Abbreviation) Governor's Island, New York. This abbreviation was in use in the 1960s when the Army, similarly to practice in the Navy, used pieces of words in abbreviations rather than simply using the first letter of the word. Governor's Island was a military facility located on an island in New York Harbor, which till its decommissioning housed the headquarters of First US Army. At one time in the 1960s the Commanding General was named Garrison Davidson, thus the nickname "Garrison's garrison" for Governor's Island.
